TEXTS: JOHN 10: 10
THEME: THE FULLNESS OF LIFE.
God is Good! All the time! And all the time! God is good!
Our Scripture today is John 10: 10 “A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”
The word of God to God’s people.
Announcement: At the end of worship I will invite Bruce & Nancy Merrill to greet us.
The Lord’s Prayer:
This passage is part of the main story where Jesus is addressing the Pharisees and teaching them that he was a good shepherd who takes his responsibilities seriously. Jesus reminds them how he is the gate as well as the gatekeeper, how he provides and how he leads them. As a good shepherd his other responsibilities is to protect the sheep. This reminds us of Psalm 23. Where David refers to God as his shepherd.
John 10: 10 is kind of lost in the main text yet it forms a big part of understanding the challenge that we face as Christians every day of our faith journey. This is the verse I would like us to focus on. Depending on what translation you have, you will find some word arrangement changing on the on verse 10b. I that I would like to bring to your notice just incase you have never noticed. I would encourage you to get your bible and look with me. The first part of verse is all the same in all translation (A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy). If you are using your bible and you would mind underlining, underline these three words for I will come back to them.
I would invite to turn to your bible. I will share a few translations on verse 10b:
- I HAVE CAME THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE, AND HAVE IT TO THE FULL (JOHN 10:10 NIV) …. I CAME THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE AND MAY HAVE IT ABUNDANTLY. American Standard Version).
- I CAME SO THAT THEY COULD HAVE LIFE – INDEED, SO THAT THEY COULD LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST (Common English Bible – CEB).
- MY PURPOSE IS TO GIVE THEM A RICH AND SATISFYING LIFE (New Living Translation – NLT)
- I CAME SO THEY MAY HAVE REAL LIFE AND ETERNAL LIFE, MORE AND BETTER LIFE THAN THEY EVER DREAMED OF (THE MESSAGE by Eugene H. Peterson)
We can start by drawing on quick conclusion from just reading of the verse. That is the shepherd is Jesus and the thief here is Devil, or evil one or Satan. You can use the word that you more comfortable but given that he comes to steal kill and destroy I might even call him a thief, killer and destroyer.
Devil, evil one: comes Steal (thief), Kill (killer) and Destroy (destroyer)
Jesus: come to give life and give it to it fullness (NIV), Abundantly (ASV), life to the fullest, A rich and satisfying life (NLT), Have real life and eternal life, more better life than they ever dreamed of(The message). Here I will leave you to decide what translation you like best. (I like message)
My sharing tonight then is to try and learn what are some of the ways that Devil (Satan evil one) has stolen, killed and destroyed. Satan (Devil) is not steal your car or furniture as a believer. The goal is to disconnect your relationship from God, your family, and your friends.
Devil has three strategies: One Steal because he is a thief, A thief is different from a robber. A robber uses violence so Satan knows violence will not work on you. Plan is to steal. Second, is to kill for he is a killer. Simply put, making sure that there is no future threat. Third is to destroy because he is destroyer if the first two do not work.
What does the Satan steal, from us? I like you to take a pause and you have a pen you can write this: Evil one takes away your joy, hope, heart of feeling for other, need for fellowship, thirst for the word of God, desire to share our faith. You can add on to the list for you know. He kills our excitement to the ministry and we no longer feel that inner satisfaction that we used to experience. It becomes a chore. He destroys the sense of connection that used to be hence life becomes survival for the fittest.
Evil comes to destroys the church family our community that used to hold us together. He replaces the above with; mistrust, disengagement, judgment, withdraw, self-certification, never feeling the pain of your brothers and sisters. As long as I am okay it does not matter.
Jesus is promising us to give us life: Life in its fullness, abundant life, life to it fullest. How we do then get back to the fullness of life that Jesus has promised; We have to long for him as deer longs for water, we have to seek him for all who seek will find. We have to be willing to drink from his well everyday. Providing with the spiritual and physical food.
